This work was inspired by the Catenary series of paintings and prints by Jasper Johns.
A rope suspended from two points on either end of the paper was used to create the forms in this work, meaning that its composition is not determined by the artist’s intentions but by gravity. To create this work, the rope was “printed” either by suspending it behind the paper and rubbing over it with charcoal, or suspending it in front of the paper after soaking the rope in ink and pressing it onto the paper with a brayer. The rope was suspended repeatedly in this manner until the top point on a given side had been connected to all points on the opposite side.
